Short Interval Control – The Basics You Need To Know

Are you tired of month-end surprises? We get Back to Basics and discuss the Short Interval Control methodology.

Updated 14 March 2025 2 min read

Do you want your manufacturing organisation to respond rapidly to changes? Or to deliver on agreed targets, quickly identifying and solving issues as soon as they arise? Short Interval Control (SIC) methodology is a smart way to structure frontline decision-making to reach efficiency based on real-time data. Let’s get back to basics and discuss the SIC methodology.

What is SIC?

Short Interval Control (SIC) is a factory-floor process designed to drive production improvements. This quick (5-minute) and focused review of performance during a shift involves:

  1. Check data from the past interval and actions taken.

  2. Evaluating current performance.

  3. Defining needed data and reviewing actions for the next interval.

Moving data decision-making closer to the source maximises speed, efficiency, and profitability. Frontline staff in process plants often hold the best position to identify improvement opportunities. With SIC, they can track efficiency and key process data in real time, making informed decisions to take immediate action and prevent losses.

How, When and Who

How

Utilising a digital visual tool like the Cyzag platform for real-time trends and contextual data. All actions are registered and easily accessible. To start Short Interval Control, you should:

  • Define the focus metric and designate a leader to drive and keep teams focused.

  • Validate data collection by verifying sensors, calibration routines, measuring range, and collection interval.

  • Check the granularity of measurement, ensuring an adequate number of data points in the interval.

  • Train team members to understand the process and use the tool, ensuring everyone can identify deviations and propose actions.

When

SIC is performed every two to four hours, breaking the shift into “short intervals.”

Who

Typically conducted by 2-4 people working in the shift, including panel and field operators, shift supervisor, engineer, and maintenance personnel.

Which Parameters Work with SIC?

Any parameter or equipment crucial for team/plant performance can be selected. Typical variables include OEE, raw materials consumption, quality parameters, energy and water consumption, and emissions. The image below showcases an example of a trend in energy consumption in a process plant, demonstrating lower and more stable consumption after implementing SIC.
