Stolt Tankers sought to embed Continuous Improvement (CI) across its global fleet of 104 vessels and 4,000 seafarers. Initially using manual tools, the CI@Sea programme laid out the groundwork for improvement at sea, but scaling required a digital, collaborative platform. Partnering with Cyzag, Stolt Tankers implemented a solution that tripled PDCA activity during the pilot and is on track to double annual throughput, unlocking efficiency, safety, and quality improvements while reducing administrative workload.

The Challenge

Stolt Tankers faced challenges in scaling CI across a distributed fleet:

  • Diverse fleet spanning multiple time zones, cultures, and digital readiness

  • Manual PDCA tracking via Excel and emails, limiting visibility and engagement

  • Lack of interactivity and recognition for crew contributions

  • Difficulty sharing learnings across vessels and connecting ship and shore teams

The company needed a platform to unify teams, streamline CI workflows, and enhance collaboration while supporting rewards and training initiatives.

The Solution

Stolt Tankers selected Cyzag after evaluating five platforms for usability, scalability, and flexibility. Key elements of the solution included:

  • Digital PDCA workflows with guided steps, integrated approvals, and automated reporting

  • Collaborative workspaces connecting ship and shore teams

  • High adoption and engagement through a train-the-trainer rollout and iterative platform improvements

  • Customisation and flexibility, allowing each vessel to tailor workflows to its operations

  • Integration with rewards and training systems to motivate and recognise crew contributions

The pilot on 36 ships established strong adoption and informed platform refinements, leading to a fleet-wide rollout across 104 vessels in six months.

The Results

  • PDCA activity tripled during the pilot and is on track to more than double annually

  • Streamlined and standardised CI workflows improved consistency and traceability

  • Automated reporting reduced administrative workload for superintendents

  • Enhanced collaboration and knowledge sharing across the fleet

  • Strengthened culture of continuous improvement with visible recognition for crew contributions

  • Improved proactive problem detection and faster resolution of recurring operational issues
